SOUTH TIROL Police discover what drove a driver into a group of tourists by car and killed six of them

All six are believed to be from Germany, said a police spokesman in Bolzano.

Authorities believe the driver was drunk at the time he hit a group of people with a sports car in the mountain village of Luttachu / Lutag at about 1am at night.

Eleven others were injured, four of them severely.

The 20-year-old driver, a local resident, survived the crash.

He had blood alcohol, according to media reports.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to launch an investigation into the murder, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Young tourists came for skiing and are believed to have been returning from the dance when the accident occurred.
